A Look At Abalone Pearls by Rock Ren

Not only are Abalone Pearls one of the most rarest pearls in the world, they are also one of the most beautiful pearls one could ever see. The rich and exotic colors make them even more unique as well as beautiful. Within the inner ‘mother-of-pearl’ shell, one can see the wide varieties of colors as well as the intense luster. These colors include a mixed color palate of green, blue, orange, silver, lavender, and pink. Keep in mind these colors aren’t the only colors these pearls have the ability to come out in, every imaginable conceivable mixture is possible as well.

In the year of 1907, the capture of black abalones that measured less than 12 inches long was outlawed by the California legislature. Abalone pearls remain very rare since there hasn’t been much success in forcing the abalone to produce pearls. The abalone is a primitive, one-shell mollusk that is at least 30 million years old.

The abalone can be found in Alaska all the way to the lower parts of California. Other types of abalones can be found in places such as New Zealand, Korea, Japan, and Australia. There are 8 different types of abalone pearls that exist.

Another interesting tidbit of information is that large abalone pearls are found in the images of Buddha that were made in 300 A.D. There have been certain cultures throughout history that have placed little or no value upon pearls. Instead, they focus on luminescent ‘mother-of-pearl’ from mollusk shells.

Abalone pearls have the ability to vary in color, they can be either be hollow or solid as well. Natural pearl shapes will also vary in shapes. They can be anything from oval or round all the way to being giant horn shapes or flat baroques. Several pearls that are made up of various colors are able to be found within a single mollusk. Natural abalone pearls are know to have thick nacreous layers. This form is alike to the Oriental Pearl formation, however, the nacreous layers of the oriental pearl are known to be thicker than the ones of the abalone pearls.

The abalone is the only mollusk that can be use completely in a commercial manner. The shell is known to be used for inlay, carvings, and buttons. Its meat is used as food. Fishing bait is made out of its guts. The most important use would have to be the brilliant pearls that are formed freely within the mollusk.
